Starless, an Exclusive Interview With the Actress Turned Pop Musician
Starless (Brianna Knickerbocker) took the time to give us an exclusive update on her music journey, upcoming plans, and her recent success moving from voice actress to pop songwriter. Here is the interview below.
Hi, Bri! Or should I say Starless… tell our readers who don’t know you what you do exactly:
Well, I'm an anime and videogame voice actress, usually known for my work in Re:ZERO (Rem), Catherine Full Boday (Rin), and many other titles. And about a year and a half ago I decided to pursue my other big dream, singing, and songwriting. I decided to go with the alias Starless for my music. My music's this vibey blend of electronic and pop, and my music kind of reflects the night, where love, heartbreak, and all kinds of mistakes happen in the dark.
That’s a really big jump, moving from voice acting to songwriting! What do you love most about making music that draws you towards it?
I love the storytelling; it's really related to acting for me. And starting with these interesting note choices in a melody, sending it to my producer and their unique choices on top creating this emotive and intense sound, bringing what was in my imagination to life. It's such magic. You can listen to all my newest releases on all major platforms like Spotify and I have links for iTunes, my merch and other fun goodies on my website: Starless Music Official Website
Thank you for sharing those links! What's your favorite song you've written so far and why?
My favorite track that's out now is actually my cover to 5 Seconds of Summer's Youngblood, it is so vibey and electric. It's the first song I made a music video for, and I did it during quarantine by myself at home! It's so hard to pick one, they're all so unique. I just have to do one last shoutout for Underneath because I filmed an all blacklight music video for it that's just so different and cool, I can't not share it: Underneath Music Video
Some of my favorite tracks are actually released as one-day limited releases on my Bandcamp. I love doing limited releases because it feels so secret and special then. Definitely follow me on Bandcamp and Instagram so you know when I'm putting out these secret tracks!
You've brought your music over to Twitch too, is that right?
Yeah! I share sneak peeks of tracks, do polls so people can vote on which song I'll release next and I hold release parties monthly for each new release! I premiere the music video that I've made, reveal what the next track release will be, we do group photos and we've even started doing 1-1 "photo booth" pics! There's always a theme to match the vibe of the song, people dress up, it feels like a real party! It's always such a blast.
Twitch is by far where we have the most fun so definitely come and join the party: Brianna Knickerbocker on Twitch
